Finale Between Miami & Florida State Cancelled

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The series finale between Miami and Florida State was cancelled due to inclement weather Sunday.

The game entered into a lightning delay at roughly 1:55 p.m., and the game was eventually called off at 3:41 p.m. The game will not be made up; the Hurricanes split the series after Florida State won Game 1 (6-3) Friday and Miami won Game 2 (5-4) Saturday.

“When you go to home plate and you hand the umpires the lineup card, you’re no longer in charge,” head coach Jim Morris said. “The umpires are in charge at that point. Our game management person brought the umpires in, showed them the radar and showed them there were some possible lightning strikes in the area.”

When the lightning alarm sounded, players and staff were ordered to clear the field by the umpiring crew.

“Once the lightning alarm goes off, you’re not allowed to be on the field,” Morris said. “The umpires are in charge. We had our players in our rubber cleats, the non-starters, all day today to go out and cover the field. He wouldn’t let them go out. Then he stopped Florida State from going out, too…we couldn’t put the tarp out.”

Miami was trailing, 2-0, with two outs in the third at the time the game was delayed and eventually called off.

The Hurricanes will make the short trip to FIU on Tuesday. First pitch for the contest, slated for broadcast on WVUM 90.5 FM, is set for 7 p.m.
