Herndon Named Mackey Award Semifinalist

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — University of Miami senior Christopher Herndon IV was among those players named semifinalists for the 2017 Mackey Award honoring the nation’s top tight end, it was announced Tuesday.

One of eight players named semifinalists, Herndon has enjoyed a breakout senior season for the Hurricanes, helping lead Miami to a 9-0 start and a No. 2 ranking in both the Associated Press rankings and Amway Coaches Poll.

Herndon has posted career highs in every statistical category, and ranks second on the Hurricanes in receptions (36), receiving yards (422) and receiving touchdowns (four). The Georgia native, who has started all nine games this season at tight end, was one of three semifinalists from the ACC – the most of any conference.

Over his four-year career at Miami, Herndon has caught 82 passes for 993 yards and seven touchdowns. He is looking to become the second Miami tight end to ever win the award, joining Kellen Winslow II (2003).

Mackey, who played collegiately at Syracuse, was a tight end by whom all others are measured. He was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA. NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position.

The 2017 Mackey Award recipient will be announced on December 6, 2017 and then presented live on December 7, 2017 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU.
