CORAL GABLES, Fla. For the second year in a row, the captains of the University of Miami soccer team will be writing a blog for HurricaneSports.com throughout the season called Captain’s Corner.

Senior Gianna Dal Pozzo provided her second entry of the year Thursday, one day prior to the team’s home opener versus Ohio State. The midfielder/defender reviews the Hurricanes’ 2-0 road trip to begin the season and previews Friday’s match against the Buckeyes . . .

Hello, Canes fans! It’s been an awesome start to the season. I couldn’t have asked for a better beginning to my senior year.

We’re now 2-0 and the team has done well on both sides of the ball, scoring often while not conceding any goals. After the weekend, Krissy [Fisher] was named the NSCAA College Player of the Week! That’s a great accolade for her and the whole team was very proud of her.

Friday night we played UNF. Of course, we had a lightning delay in warm up, but that didn’t distract us. We won, 7-0, which was great for our confidence. A lot of girls got minutes and the level of play remained high throughout the game.

We had some parents at the games over the weekend, so it was nice to see some familiar faces. I think Molly Lynch’s parents come to every game. Her dad always has a funny sign, so we all are excited to see what it says.

We wanted to do something together as a team Saturday night, so we had game night in the hotel. It was so much fun and everyone had a good time. Our team is silly, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re very close and it makes everything that much more enjoyable. I honestly believe it makes a difference on the field, too.

On Sunday we played Stetson and won 3-0. The weather was hot and the grass was thick, but we got the result we needed. It’s great to see improvement from last year. We probably would’ve won both games, but wouldn’t have been as dominant. Along with a talented group of freshmen coming in, I think we’re more disciplined in following coach’s game plan and work together better. Getting six points on the road is crucial and gives us momentum moving forward into our home games.

On Friday, we play Ohio State and the team is very excited. It will be a good test for us to see how we match up against a higher level team. They are also 2-0 on the season, so I think it’ll be a battle. This week we’ve been watching film on them and finding their weaknesses to exploit. I believe we can be successful and execute our game plan, so hopefully we’ll come out with a win!
