Ruiz Selected by Astros in 28th Round of MLB Draft
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior infielder Johnny Ruiz was selected in the 28th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Houston Astros Saturday.
Ruiz, the No. 847 overall pick, joined teammates Zack Collins (first round, Chicago White Sox), Willie Abreu (sixth round, Colorado Rockies), Bryan Garcia (sixth round, Detroit Tigers), Brandon Lopez (10th round, Minnesota Twins), Danny Garcia (15th round, Seattle Mariners) and Jacob Heyward (18th round, San Francisco Giants) as Miami draftees through the first 28 rounds.
One of just four Hurricanes to start all 59 games entering NCAA Super Regionals, Ruiz ranked third on the team in batting average (.338) and RBI (51) heading into the second weekend of the postseason.
Ruiz was a second-team All-ACC selection, and was named to the 2016 ACC Championship All-Tournament Team.
In his first year as a regular starter, Ruiz has recorded career high totals of 76 hits, 45 runs scored, 16 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 56 RBI. The Coral Gables native has recorded a .432 on-base percentage and a .489 slugging percentage entering Saturday.
