CHAPEL HILL. N.C. — No. 13 Miami fell behind early and couldn’t recover Sunday at Boshamer Stadium, dropping its series finale to host North Carolina by a final score of 10-3.

The Hurricanes (20-9, 8-4 ACC) captured the series Saturday with a 4-3 win in extra innings, but could not finish off the three-game sweep. The series win marked the third straight such effort for Miami, who remains atop the Coastal Division.

The Tar Heels (16-11, 6-6 ACC) tagged Miami righthander Enrique Sosa (3-3) for seven runs in just 2.2 innings. The junior struggled on the hill, scattering nine hits and walking two with no strikeouts.

Having already allowed two runs in the bottom of the first, Sosa induced a double play from Korey Dunbar to avoid any further damage. Two more runs scored in the second on a sacrifice fly from Skye Bolt and an RBI single from Landon Lassiter.

Miami halved the deficit in the third inning, when sophomore Willie Abreu reached on an error and Christopher Barr singled up the middle on a hit-and-run to put runners on the corners. An RBI single from Johnny Ruiz gave Miami its first run, and an RBI groundout from Eusebio two batters later made it 4-2.

But the Tar Heels struck for five runs in the bottom half of the inning that put North Carolina in command at 10-2.

The visitors got one back in the seventh, when three straight singles from Brandon Lopez, Jacob Heyward and David Thompson loaded the bases. Zack Collins, who belted the gamewinning home run Saturday, lifted a sacrifice fly to leftfield to make it 10-3.

Thompson’s single extended his hitting streak to a career-long 18 games. That was as close as Miami would get, however, as North Carolina used three relievers after Benton Moss (4-0) started and went 6.0+ innings.

Senior Ryan Otero pitched the final 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing no hits with one strikeout.

The Hurricanes open a nine-game homestand Wednesday with a matchup against Bethune-Cookman. First pitch for the game, slated for broadcast on WVUM 90.5 FM, is set for 6 p.m.
