CORAL GABLES, Fla. – No. 13 Miami had its six-game home winning streak snapped Wednesday, as the host Hurricanes fell to visiting FGCU by a final score of 8-1.

Miami (18-8) struggled to get any offense going against Eagles righthander Jordan Desguin, who allowed just four hits in a complete-game effort.

“It was a disappointing game. I didn’t think we were ready to play, and I thought they were. We got outplayed in every phase of the game,” head coach Jim Morris said.

Desguin struck out five batters and walked just one, throwing 118 pitches in his first career start.

FGCU first baseman Mike Rivera connected for two home runs off Miami starter Danny Garcia, including a three-run shot that stayed just fair down the leftfield line in the first inning to give the visitors an early lead.

Rivera’s second home run, a two-run shot, gave FGCU (12-13-1) a 5-0 lead in the third, but Miami struck back for a run in the bottom half on an RBI single from leadoff hitter Carl Chester that plated the speedy Christopher Barr.

“Two mistakes on fastballs,” Garcia said of Rivera’s pair of home runs.

Barr, one of the few Hurricanes who found success at the plate against Desguin, finished 2-for-3.

Garcia (4-1) allowed a career-high 11 hits in the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned). He struck out six and did not walk a batter in a 96-pitch effort.

“I just couldn’t make adjustments to any pitches,” Garcia said. “When you keep the ball up in the zone, that’s what happens.”

Junior David Thompson extended his hitting streak to a career-best 15 games with a fourth-inning single, but said Miami’s offensive struggles were due to a poor approach.

“He left a lot of pitches up,” Thompson said. “It was one of those days where we were popping balls up and didn’t put any pressure on the defense.”

No. 13 Miami hits the road for another ACC series this weekend, facing off against North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. First pitch for Friday’s opener, slated for broadcast on ESPN3 and WVUM 90.5 FM, is set for 6:30 p.m.
