The senior catcher extended his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games, finishing the game 2-for-4 with another strong performance.

WINSTON-SALEM. N.C. – No. 17 Miami battled back but could not finish off a series sweep Sunday at Gene Hooks Field, falling to host Wake Forest in the finale by a final score of 10-4.

The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for Miami, who powered its way to a series victory by scoring 27 runs over the first two games of the weekend.

It was Wake Forest (15-10, 4-5 ACC) who struck first Sunday afternoon, plating two runs in the first off Miami righthander Enrique Sosa. RBI singles from the talented Wake Forest duo of Nate Mondou and Will Craig gave the hosts their first lead of the weekend, but Sosa struck out Stuart Fairchild looking to strand a runner and keep the deficit at just 2-0.

Miami (18-7, 6-3 ACC) took its first lead of the game in the third, jumpstarted when freshman Carl Chester was hit by a pitch from Demon Deacons’ righthander Connor Johnstone and Ricky Eusebio followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position.

Junior George Iskenderian came up with a single through the leftside to make it 2-1, while a wild pitch from Johnstone scored Eusebio to tie the game 2-2.

Some heads-up baserunning by Miami resulted in the go-ahead run. Junior David Thompson struck out swinging, but took off for first when the ball hit the turf in front of catcher Bruce Steel. Iskenderian raced home when Steel threw the ball to first, sliding in safely to give Miami a 3-2 advantage.

But the Demon Deacons plated three runs in the fourth to regain the lead. A solo home run Fairchild tied the game 3-3, while an RBI double from Jonathan Pryor and a sacrifice fly from Mondou rebuilt Wake Forest’s lead to 5-3.

Sosa (3-2) was charged with five earned runs in just 3.1 innings, as he struggled to get into a rhythm against a talented Demon Deacons offense. The righthander struck out five batters but issued three walks on a disappointing afternoon.

A two-RBI double from Mondou in the sixth padded Wake Forest’s lead to 7-3. Miami got one back in the top half of the seventh on an RBI groundout from Abreu that scored Thompson, who tripled to deep center on a ball that Wake Forest outfielder Joey Rodriguez lost in the sun.

Thompson extended his career-long hitting streak to 14 games with the basehit.

Wake Forest reliever Parker Dunshee pitched the final 6.2 innings in relief after entering for Johnstone in the third inning. He allowed just one run on six hits in the outing.

The Demon Deacons scored three runs in the eighth inning to seal the win.

The Hurricanes return to Mark Light Field Wednesday for their season series finale with FGCU. First pitch for the game, slated for broadcast on WVUM 90.5 FM, is set for 6 p.m.
