Miami W. Tennis Ready for Southeast Regionals
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team will wrap up play for the month of October at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals this weekend.
The University of Georgia will play host to the event in Athens, Ga. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The tournament features players from 15 schools in Florida and Georgia.
Eighty players will take part in the singles competition, while 37 duos will play in the doubles competition. Twenty ranked singles players, including nine in the top 50, and seven ranked doubles duos are set to participate.
All eight Hurricanes will be competing in both singles and doubles play, with seven Miami players placed in the singles main draw already. Freshman Clara Tanielian is seeded first overall in qualifying singles and will vie for one of eight available main draw positions.
Miami features five players in the ITA national rankings, with senior Stephanie Wagner leading the way at sixth in the country. She is followed by sophomore Sinead Lohan at No. 13, senior Clementina Riobueno at No. 63, sophomore Wendy Zhang at No. 73, and sophomore Yolimar Ogando at No. 94.
Each of Miami’s four doubles pairs have already been tabbed for the main draw. Riobueno and sophomore Zhang are ranked No. 50 and will play together, while Lohan teams with freshman Ana Madcur, Tanielian joins forces with Wagner, and sophomores Silvia Fuentes and Ogando team up.
Play will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Competition on Sunday and Monday is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. The qualifying matches will all take place Thursday and then 32-pair doubles main draw and 64-player singles main draw will start Friday.
The lone match for Miami hursday will feature Tanielian, who has a first round bye, against either Francisca Norregaard of Georgia Southern or Marisa Ruiz of Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m. The winner will earn a spot in the singles main draw.
