Six Hurricanes to Participate in Bedford Cup
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team will resume its fall season over the weekend, as it trips to the Bedford Cup on the campus of FGCU.
Held at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers, Fla., the tournament will feature players from the state of Florida’s Division I teams. The event, which includes both singles and doubles draws, begins Friday and runs through Sunday
Six Hurricanes will be making the trip northwest to compete: sophomore Silvia Fuentes, freshman Ana Madcur, sophomore Yolimar Ogando, senior Clementina Riobueno, freshman Clara Tanielian, and sophomore Wendy Zhang.
Of that half dozen, the Bedford Cup will be the first action in 19 days for Fuentes, Madcur, Ogando, and Tanielian. Meanwhile, Riobueno and Zhang each participated in the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships qualifying singles draw Oct. 6-7 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The top three seeds in the Singles A Draw are all Hurricanes, with No. 73 Zhang first, No. 94 Ogando second and No. 63 Riobueno third. Zhang and Ogando will both have first round byes. Additionally, Fuentes, Madcur and Tanielian are also in the A Draw.
In doubles, Ogando/Zhang are seeded first in the A Draw, while Fuentes/Riobueno and Madcur/Tanielian are also in the top draw.
So far in the fall 2015 season, Miami players have tallied a 41-22 record in singles play and a 12-6 mark in doubles action. Riobueno, Tanielian and Zhang lead the Hurricanes with four doubles victories, while Ogando is the lone unbeaten, going 7-0 with four wins over ranked opponents.
