Kennedy Drafted in 14th Round by Dodgers
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior catcher Garrett Kennedy became the fourth Hurricane selected in the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Wednesday when the Los Angeles Dodgers picked the backstop in the 14th round.
Kennedy, selected No. 432 overall, joined teammates Andrew Suarez (No. 61 overall, San Francisco Giants), David Thompson (No. 119 overall, New York Mets) and George Iskenderian (No. 211, Milwaukee Brewers) as Miami draftees through the first 14 rounds.
The Davie, Fla., native had a breakout season for Miami, batting .329 with seven home runs and 51 RBI. He set career highs in every offensive category, including hits (52), doubles (11), total bases (104), slugging percentage (.488), walks (36) and on-base percentage (.440).
Kennedy, who was a third-team All-ACC selection, split time at catcher and designated hitter in his breakout season. Just a year after hitting .231 with two home runs and 16 RBI, Kennedy ended the season ranked fourth in the ACC with a .361 average through the regular
season and fourth in on-base percentage at .463 during the same timeframe.
He hit .372 in ACC play in 2015, with four home runs and 24 RBI.
Kennedy, who started 61 of 64 possible games, helped power the Hurricanes to a 49-15 overall record, their second straight ACC Coastal Division crown, the NCAA Coral Gables Regional title and the 24th College World Series berth in program history.
The 2015 MLB Draft continues Wednesday with rounds No. 11-40.
