Brewers Select Iskenderian in Seventh Round
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes junior infielder George Iskenderian became the third Hurricane selected in the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Tuesday when he was picked by the Milwaukee Brewers in the seventh round.
Iskenderian, who was chosen No. 211 overall, joined teammates Andrew Suarez (No. 61, San Francisco Giants) and David Thompson (No. 119, New York Mets) as Miami draftees through the first two days.
The Englewood Cliffs, N.J., native became just the second Hurricane to ever capture the ACC’s batting title, finishing the regular season with a .391 batting average to rank No. 1 in the league.
He also led the ACC in both total hits (81) and runs scored (61) in the regular season, and ranked third in steals (22) and on-base percentage (.482) over the same timeframe.
Iskenderian, who led all ACC players with a .387 average in conference play, recorded Miami’s first five-hit game since 2011 when he went 5-for-5 against FAU in a 14-6 win on May 12. He ended the Coral Gables Super Regional with a team-best .367 average, and totaled the third-most RBI on the year (55) among Hurricanes.
Iskenderian was one of just three players to start all 64 games in 2015, helping power the Hurricanes to a 49-15 overall record, their second straight ACC Coastal Division crown, the NCAA Coral Gables Regional title and the 24th College World Series berth in program history.
The 2015 MLB Draft continues Tuesday with rounds No. 3-10. Rounds No. 11-40 are set for Wednesday, June 10 at 12 p.m.
