Salas Picks Up Two National Weekly Awards

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Senior righthander Javi Salas was further recognized for his March 4 perfect game against Villanova Tuesday, earning National Player of the Week honors from both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA) and Louisville Slugger.

Salas was one of six selected Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, joining Chris Pike (Oklahoma City), Kolton Mahoney (Brigham Young), Jace Fry (Oregon State), Matt Imhof (Cal Poly) and Mac James (Oklahoma).

The Coral Gables, Fla., also earned National Pitcher of the Week honors from the NCBWA.

Salas, who was voted a team captain for the second consecutive season prior to 2014, threw just the 23rd perfect game in modern Division I history (since 1957) in a 17-0 victory over Villanova at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. It was the first for a Miami pitcher since Kevin Sheary accomplished the feat against Southern Illinois in 1987.

Salas’ perfect game was the first in Division I since Matt Roberts of Virginia in 2011. He was named ACC Pitcher of the Week Monday, becoming the first Hurricane to do since Andrew Suarez on April 22.
