@MiamiTrack Ready for Don Kirby Invitational
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Miami track and field program heads to New Mexico to compete in one of the top meets in the country this week.
The Hurricanes will have 34 student-athletes – 16 men and 18 women – competing in the Don Kirby Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The two-day meet will feature eight men’s teams that are ranked in the top 25 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association and seven top 25 women’s teams.
“We are looking forward to competing in Albuquerque this weekend,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “It will be a very competitive meet and will are looking for some very good performances in our final tune up for ACC Championships in two weeks.”
The Canes will look to get big performances from several of their talented student-athletes.
On the men’s side, thowers Isaiah Simmons, Gian Ragonesi and Carlos Mangum will try to improve off their most recent record-setting performances.
Simmons set new UM indoor records a week ago in shot put (18.20m) and weight throw (17.91m), while Ragonesi moved into third place in school history in both shot put (16.42m) and weight throw (16.44m). Mangum had an impressive debut as the freshman tossed the second-best weight throw in Miami track history (17.25m).
Miami’s women will look for another big weekend from Shakima Wimbley. The fantastic freshman has earned a victory in each meet this season, winning the 400m at both the Nittany Lion Challenge and the VT Elite Meet and finishing first in the 200m at the McCravy Memorial Meet.
Alysha Newman will look to improve on her 4.31m mark in the women’s pole vault, while thrower Amber Monroe will look to build upon her success in the shot put after winning the event at the VT Elite Meet a week ago.
The meet kicks off Friday at 6 p.m. ET with the women’s weight throw, while running events open at 8 p.m. ET with the men’s unseeded 400m dash. The women’s unseeded pole vault will start Saturday’s competition at 12:30 p.m. ET and the men’s 60m hurdles preliminaries will be the first running event, scheduled for 12:45 p.m. Saturday.
