Heyward Becomes Tenth Hurricane Selected

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami signee Jacob Heyward became the tenth Hurricane selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Saturday.

Heyward was drafted in the 38th round (No. 1153 overall) by the Atlanta Braves

Heyward, the brother of MLB All-Star Jason Heyward, burst onto the national scene as a junior in 2012, when he hit .333 with six homeruns and 30 RBI to lead Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy to the Region 5-A championship. Heyward was ranked No. 196 in Perfect Game’s top 500 high school player rankings, and the No. 11 player in the state of Georgia.

Heyward joins fellow signees Matt McPhearson (fourth round, Arizona Diamondbacks), J.D. Underwood (fifth round, Los Angeles Dodgers), Willie Abreu (14th round, Cincinnati Reds), Derik Beauprez (25th round, Boston Red Sox) and Zack Collins (27th round, Cincinnati Reds) as draftees through the first 38 rounds.
