Salas Selected by Minnesota Twins

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami junior Javi Salas became the ninth Hurricane selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Saturday.

Salas was selected in the 38th round (No. 1130 overall) by the Minnesota Twins.

Salas, named a team captain prior to the season, opened the year in the weekend rotation before shifting to the bullpen late. In 17 total appearances, Salas made 11 starts, finished with a 5-5 record and registered an impressive 3.18 ERA. The Coral Gables, Fla., native threw three quality starts (six innings or more, three earned runs or less) to open the season, and allowed just one earned run in his six relief appearances.

Salas joins fellow Hurricanes Eric Nedeljkovic (21st round, Colorado Rockies), Chantz Mack (29th round, Seattle Mariners) and Bryan Radziewski, as well as signees Matt McPhearson (fourth round, Arizona Diamondbacks), J.D. Underwood (fifth round, Los Angeles Dodgers), Willie Abreu (14th round, Cincinnati Reds), Derik Beauprez (25th round, Boston Red Sox) and Zack Collins (27th round, Cincinnati Reds) as draftees through the first 38 rounds.
