Mack Picked by Seattle Mariners in 29th Round

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami outfielder Chantz Mack became the seventh Hurricane selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Saturday.

Mack, a four-year outfielder and senior team captain, was selected in the 29th round (No. 867 overall) by the Seattle Mariners.

“It’s one of the happiest moments of my life,” Mack said. “I really don’t know what to do with myself. I can’t wait to get out there and just keep playing baseball.’

The Homestead, Fla., native was one of just two Hurricanes to start all 62 games in 2013, where he led the team in several offensive categories. The left-handed Mack ranked first in batting average (.302), on-base percentage (.444), hits (61), runs (44), triples (3), walks (41) and stolen bases (15). He recorded 18 multi-hit games, the most of any Hurricane, and served as a catalyst in the lineup as the No. 3 hitter.

Mack joins fellow senior Eric Nedeljkovic (21st round, Colorado Rockies) and signees Matt McPhearson (fourth round, Arizona Diamondbacks), J.D. Underwood (fifth round, Los Angeles Dodgers), Willie Abreu (14th round, Cincinnati Reds), Derik Beauprez (25th round, Boston Red Sox) and Zack Collins (27th round, Cincinnati Reds) as draftees through the first 29 rounds.
