Abreu Taken by Cincinnati Reds in 14th Round

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami signee and Mater Academy standout Willie Abreu was the third Hurricane selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Saturday.

Abreu, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound outfielder and Hialeah, Fla., native, was selected in the 14th round (No. 435 overall) by the Cincinnati Reds.

Abreu won a gold medal with the 16-and-under USA Baseball National Team at the IBAF 16U World Youth Championships. Over his seven games with Team USA in Mexico, Abreu hit .423 (11-for-16).  As a senior at Mater, Abreu led the team with a .513 batting average, belted six homeruns and racked up 26 RBI.

Known for his powerful left-handed swing , Abreu was ranked No. 175 in Perfect Game’s Top 500 Draft-eligible prospect rankings, and No. 202 overall by Baseball America.
