Underwood Drafted by Dodgers in Fifth Round

CORAL GABLES, Fla. —  University of Miami signee and Palm Beach State righthander J.D. Underwood was the second Hurricane selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Friday.

Underwood, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound righthander out of West Palm Beach, Fla., was selected in the fifth round (No. 154 overall) by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Underwood, the son of former major league Tom Underwood, successfully guided Palm Beach State to the NJCAA Division I World Series after leading the Panthers to their first Florida junior college crown since 1984. Underwood was named the tournament’s most outstanding pitcher, having pitched two complete games with a 2-0 record and 1.00 ERA. Entering the Panthers’ NJCAA World Series opener, Underwood had tossed eight complete games in his previous nine starts.

Underwood was ranked No. 153 in Perfect Game’s Top 500 pre-Draft prospect rankings and No. 438 by Baseball America
