Radziewski Named to Golden Spikes Watch List
DURHAM, N.C. — Junior lefthander Bryan Radziewski was among those named to the USA Baseball midseason watch list for the 2013 Golden Spikes Award, honoring the top amateur baseball player in the country.
Radziewski, who ranks first on the Hurricanes and second among all pitchers in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 0.95 ERA, owns a 7-1 record through his first nine starts of the season. The former Baseball America Freshman All-American has held opposing hitters to a paltry .148 average, the lowest mark of any hurler in the ACC, and boasts a 73-to-16 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
In 56.2 innings this season, Radziewski has allowed just six earned runs. He ranks among the top pitchers in the conference in nearly every statistical category, including ERA (0.95, second), wins (seven, fourth), strikeouts (73, fifth) and complete games (two, second).
His 16 strikeouts in a complete game win over Virginia Tech (March 23), which earned him ACC Pitcher of the Week honors, came just three shy of the single-game conference record.
Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. Following the first-ever presentation of the Award to Bob Horner of Arizona State, the Golden Spikes Award has been presented each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship.
Past winners of this prestigious award include current Major League Baseball players such as Bryce Harper (’10), Stephen Strasburg (’09), Buster Posey (’08), David Price (’07), Tim Lincecum (’06), Alex Gordon (’05), Jered Weaver (’04), Rickie Weeks (’03) and Mark Kotsay (’95).
The Golden Spikes Award trophy will be awarded live on MLB Network for the third year in a row, with a live presentation scheduled during The Rundown on Friday, July 19. Through USA Baseball’s partnership with MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM), the presentation will also be simulcast with a live stream available from GoldenSpikesAward.com and USABaseball.com.
