Suarez Named ACC Pitcher of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C — For his series-clinching complete game shutout of No. 12 Clemson, sophomore lefthander Andrew Suarez was recognized with Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honors Monday.
The southpaw scattered just six hits throughout the afternoon, striking out five Clemson batters without issuing a walk en route to a 7-0 victory. The complete game was the third of Miami’s season and the first of Suarez’ career.
The Miami, Fla., native finished off an impressive weekend for Hurricane pitchers, as the team allowed the second-fewest runs ever in a three-game series (two). Suarez, along with fellow starters Chris Diaz and Bryan Radziewski, combined to allow just just two earned runs over 24.0 innings (0.75 ERA) in Miami’s second consecutive ACC series victory.
With seven weekends of the ACC season completed, Suarez ranks No. 21 in overall ERA (3.23) and No. 11 in conference ERA (2.93). He also ranks ninth in the ACC with 43.0 innings pitched in Miami’s conference slate.
The award was the second of the 2013 season for the Hurricanes. Radziewski captured ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for a complete game shutout of then-No. 22 Virginia Tech on March 23.
The Hurricanes will return to Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field Wednesday for a midweek matchup with FAU. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
