Salcines on Stopper of the Year Watch List
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — University of Miami junior AJ Salcines was among the 75 relievers named to the initial watch list for the ninth annual Stopper of the Year Award, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced Friday.
Salcines, who was named a Preseason All-American by the NCBWA in December, anchored the Hurricanes’ bullpen in his sophomore campaign. The southpaw ranked first among all Canes pitchers with an ERA of 1.40, having allowed only six earned runs in 38.2 innings of work.
The Miami, Fla., native tied for first in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2012 with 39 appearances on the hill, while his seven saves tied for seventh-most among all ACC relievers. The lefthander held hitters to a paltry .193 batting average on the season, boasted a 44:11 strikeout-to-walk ratio and maintained a flawless 3-0 record.
To close out his impressive sophomore season, Salcines was one of three Hurricanes named to the 2012 All-ACC Academic Team.
The initial list will be updated with a mid-seasonrelease the week of April 16, including the national saves leaders. At theconclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and fourother relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and releasedWednesday, June 5, prior to start of NCAA Super Regional tournamentcompetition.
