Five UM Singles & Two Duos Win at Bedford Cup
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After a lengthy rain delay postponed play in Gainesville, Fla., five individual Miami Hurricanes moved on to Saturday’s second round while the duo of Omar Aly and Mark Schanerman defeated the overall No. 1 seed, earning a spot in the Quarterfinals of the 2012 Bedford Cup held at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
In doubles, Aly paired up with Schanerman to beat Mario Samson and Jorge Blasco from UCF by an 8-4 mark in the first round, then topped the overall No. 1 seed of Taylor Albrecht and Will Neuner of FAU, 8-6.
All five singles players who moved on in the event won in straight sets. Coming off of a successful summer in which he won the ITA Summer Circuit (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Mark Schanerman made quick work of Fernando Costa, downing the UNF player 6-1, 6-1. Marco Stancati, who has made major improvements in his game over the past few months, defeated UNF’s Norbert Nemcsek 6-1, 6-3.
“Omar and Mark stood out today winning their singles and a pair of doubles matches, beating the No. 1 seed in doubles,” said Coach Mario Rincon. “Marco Stancati improved tremendously over the summer, showed the level he’s capable of playing, and although he didn’t win his doubles today, he and Wilfredo played a good match against UNF’s top team.”
Both Victor Mauz and Diego Soto downed their opponents 6-3, 6-4, as Mauz defeated John Nowak of FAU and Soto downed Laurynas Antropikas of Stetson. Omar Aly also won his first-round matchup, beating Luke Johnson of Florida, 6-2, 6-3.
Miami’s Gabriel Flores took his individual match to three sets, falling 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to Leo Nahar of UNF. Wilfredo Gonzalez lost 7-5, 6-1 to Julien Belair of UNF while Henrique Tsukamoto came up short, 6-3, 7-5, to Timo Kranz, also of UNF. In his first collegiate appearance, freshman Jack Murphy was defeated by Dylan Gunning of FGCU, 7-6, 6-3.
The Canes also took a victory from FAU as Stancati and Gonzalez downed Robbie Dubuque and Jose Fantova, 8-4. But in the Round of 16, Stancati and Gonzalez lost 9-8 (8-5) to Mortiz Buerchner and Julien Belair of UNF.
Flores and Soto lost, 8-4, to No. 4 Andres Bucaro and Benjamin Lock of Florida State while Mauz and Murphy were defeated by FAMU’s Chidi Gabriel and Admire Mushonga.
“It is a great event to start out the year, and our guys are enjoying the competition,” added Rincon.
Play begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, with a championship bracket for both singles and doubles as well as a singles consolation bracket.
The Bedford Cup is an individual draw with an 11-team field, all from the state of Florida. Those teams include Florida State and the University of Florida, who advanced to the NCAA Round of 32 and Sweet 16, respectively, as well as UNF, UCF, FAU, FAMU, FGCU, USF, Stetson, and Bethune-Cookman.
This year’s tournament is hosted by the University of Florida and runs through Sunday, Sept. 17.
