No. 51 Miami falls to Boston College

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 51 University of Miami men’s tennis team fell to Boston College this evening in a hard fought match indoors at the Grande Meadows Athletic Club in Longmeadow, Mass. The Hurricanes lost to the Eagles 5-2.
“BC played a great match and they deserved to win,” said Head Coach Mario Rincon. “They made a lot of first serves, and played solid indoor tennis.”
Wilfredo Gonzalez and Diego Soto highlighted the Canes effort today as each won their singles matches in straight sets against BC. Gonzalez defeated Billy Grokenberger at the No. 3 position as he won 6-1 and 6-4. Soto won from the No. 4 position as he beat Jonathan Raude 6-1 and 6-4.
Omar Aly played well as he won the first set, but ultimately came up short against BC’s Alex Skinner as he lost 2-6, 7-6 (1) and 6-4. Henrique Tsukamoto was the only other player to reach the third set when he was defeated by Philip Nelson 6-1, 3-6 and 6-3.
The Hurricanes were unable to recover after getting off to a slow start in the match as they lost the doubles point. Mark Schanerman and Marco Stancati kept their match close as they lost 8-7 to BC’s No. 3 doubles team of Grokenberger and Matt Wagner.
At the No. 1 position in doubles, Gonzalez and Aly lost to Skinner and Akash Muppidi 8-5. The pair of Soto and Gabriel Flores lost to Nelson and Michael McGinnis 8-4 at the No. 2 doubles position.
“We need to regroup and come back strong to play our best against a solid Maryland team,” continued Rincon.
The Hurricanes will travel to College Park, Md. to take on the Maryland Terrapins on Sun., April 1 at 12 p.m. The team will return home on Fri., April 6 to host No. 24 North Carolina at 2 p.m.
