CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team lost, 7-0, to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Tuesday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta.
Miami falls to 6-5 overall and 0-3 in the ACC while Georgia Tech improves to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in the league.
“Georgia Tech played great at the top of the line up, and they were able to get a big lead on us early,” said Coach Mario Rincon.
In doubles, Omar Aly and Wilfredo Gonzalez battled but were defeated, 9-7, at the top position, by the No. 2 doubles pair in the country, Kevin King and Juan Spir. In the second position, Gabriel Flores and Diego Soto were defeated, 8-3, by Sebastian Lopez and Vikram Hundal. Henrique Tsukamoto and Mark Schanerman matched up together for the first time ever, but wrapped up doubles play with an 8-5 loss to Eduardo Segura and Dusan Miljevic.
“I was pleased to see Mark Schanerman and Henrique Tsukamoto play solid in their first doubles match together, and Wilfredo and Omar lost a close one to one of the best teams in the country,” said Rincon. “Henrique and Victor lost in tie-breakers, but both of them played well enough to win.”
In singles, Tsukamoto played tough against Juan Melian, falling in three, (7-6, 3-6, 1-0) but taking the first set to a 7-4 tiebreak and the final to a 10-6 tiebreak. The third set tiebreak was moved indoors due to weather.
Victor Mauz also played to a 10-7 tiebreak in the third set, but came up short (3-6, 6-1, 1-0) to Eduardo Segura.
Flores faced No. 13 King while Aly matched up with No. 101 Spir, in the top positions, respectively, but both Canes lost in straight sets.
Miami’s Gonzalez fell to Miljevic (6-4, 6-1) and Marco Stancati came up short (6-2, 6-2) to Lopez.
“We are looking forward to playing our next matches at home, starting with Alabama on Saturday,” concluded Rincon.
The Canes return to Coral Gables for a trio of home matches beginning with the March 17 event against Alabama at 3:30 p.m. On March 23, Miami faces NC State at 2 p.m. and two days later, UM faces Wake Forest at Noon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
