2011 Baseball America Freshman All-America Team
DURHAM, N.C. – University of Miami left-hand pitcher Bryan Radziewski was named to the Baseball America Freshman All-America Second Team on Tuesday evening. A season ago, right-hand pitcher E.J. Encinosa was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team, giving Hurricanes pitchers back-to-back years with All-America rookie honors.
Bryan Radziewski finished the 2011 campaign with a team-leading nine wins, amassing a 9-2 record with a team third-lowest 3.35 earned run average. The Miami native and Florida Christian School product started a team-high matching 16 games for the Hurricanes, including becoming the first freshman in more than 20 years to start a season-opener on the hill. In the season-opener for UM against Rutgers (Feb. 18), he struck out eight and allowed just a single earned run on three hits scattered across six full innings without factoring into the decision – an eventual extra-innings win for the Canes.
“It is an honor to have my name on this list,” said Radziewski upon finding out he had been named to the list. “This is just the start to what I plan on accomplishing in the near future.”
The crafty left-hander finished the season ranked in the top 10 for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) across several categories. Radziewski led the league in runners picked off (10), tied for fifth in starts (16), tied for eighth in wins (9) and was 10th in batters struck out (92) – all in 91 1/3 innings worked.
Radziewski ended the season with six consecutive wins in games for which he earned a decision. He took a no-decision in the NCAA Gainesville [Fla.] Regional elimination game against Jacksonville (June 5), and failed to factor into the decision in Miami’s victory over North Carolina as part of the ACC Tournament (May 26). Against Jacksonville in the Canes’ 6-3 win, Radziewski tossed 6 2/3 innings and fanned seven – also allowing three runs on seven hits.
UNC’s Colin Moran (3B) was selected as this year’s Baseball America Freshman of the Year, now giving the ACC a total of five in that department since 1982.
The University of Miami leads all schools with five Freshman of the Year awards – the last coming by way of Chris Hernandez in 2008. Alex Fernandez (1989), Pat Burrell (1996), Kevin Howard (2000) and Ryan Braun (2003) were the others for UM. Stanford sits behind UMiami with four Freshman of the Year award winners, while Texas and UNC each share three.
The Southeastern Conference (SEC) and ACC led all leagues with five Freshman All-Americans in 2011. The ACC had the most first-teamers (three).
The teams were selected by the staff of Baseball America.
