Feb. 8, 2011

Coral Gables, Fla. – University of Miami junior third baseman Harold Martinez has recently been named to the 2011 Baseball America Preseason All-America Team released by the publication. For Martinez, this is his second Preseason All-America honor, selected in December to the Louisville Slugger Third Team.

Martinez, a 6-3, 208-pound native of Miami, was selected to the third team as a third baseman. In 2010, Martinez finished the season leading the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in homeruns with 21. Additionally, he registered a batting average of .295 in a team-leading 241 plate appearances, while starting all 62 games for the Hurricanes as a sophomore – 60 of those coming at third base.

That allowed Martinez to be named to the Second Team All-ACC Team at the end of the season.

During Miami’s NCAA Super Regional [Gainesville, Fla.] run last season, Martinez batted .261 pounding out nine RBI on six hits, two homeruns and crossing the plate four times. He also stole three of his five bases on the campaign during the five-game span for the `Canes.

The Braddock Senior High School product finished the year atop the UM squad in RBI (69), second in slugging percentage (.598) and third in hits (71). He scored 48 times on the season, adding 10 doubles and swiping five bases in just seven attempts.

Along with Martinez, a total of six ACC student-athletes were named to the Baseball America Preseason All-America Team. Danny Hultzen (Virginia), Mike McGee (Florida State), Jed Bradley (Georgia Tech), Jeff Schaus (Clemson) and Levi Michael (North Carolina) also earned the distinction.

ACC teams open their seasons Feb. 18 and conclude regular-season play May 21. The ACC Baseball Championship will be held May 25-29 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.

Miami opens the 2011 campaign against Rutgers on Friday, Feb. 18 inside Alex Rodriguez Park at 7 p.m.
