Jan. 31, 2011

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball team picked up its fifth preseason top 25 ranking on Monday, entering the NCBWA Division I preseason poll at No. 20.

The `Canes, who rank No. 18 in the USA Today/ESPN and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll, are one of six Atlantic Coast Conference teams to earn a spot in the NCBWA preseason poll. Miami finished last season ranked No. 13 in the final NCBWA poll after ending the year 43-20 overall, and advancing to the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional.

TCU earned the top spot in the preseason top 25, followed by UCLA, Florida, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma to round out the top five positions.

Clemson (No. 7), Florida State (No. 10), Virginia (No. 13), Georgia Tech (No. 21) and North Carolina (No. 29) all represented the ACC, along with Miami at the No. 20 position.

All six of the ACC’s preseason ranked teams earned spots in the 2010 NCAA Tournament and were joined by NC State and Virginia Tech to give the conference a league-record eight teams in postseason play. NC State and Virginia Tech received votes in the 2011 NCBWA preseason poll.

The NCBWA poll voters come from 40 college baseball writers and related media persons from throughout the nation. After a preseason Top 35 listing, the remainder of the polls will feature a national Top 30, beginning with the Feb. 21 NCBWA survey.

This week’s poll has representation by 12 different conferences among the 300 baseball-playing schools in the 2011 NCAA Division I ranks. The polls of 2010 had teams from 15 different DI conferences rated at least one week. For more information or to join the NCBWA, please go to www.ncbwa.com.
