Hurricanes Wrap Up Summer Ball

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Seven University of Miami student-athletes recently wrapped up their summer baseball seasons to return to campus for the start of classes this week.

Nathan Melendres closed out up his first summer in the Cape Code Baseball League ranking 11th with 13 stolen bases in 29 games. Melendres hit .225 with five RBI, seven runs and 16 hits in 71 at-bats with the Brewster Whitecaps.

Michael Broad and David Villasuso were teammates on the Valley Baseball League’s champion Luray Wranglers. Broad hit .294 with two homers, 22 RBI, 18 runs scored and nine steals in 30 games while Villasuso hit .234 with four homers, 10 RBI and 15 runs scored in 31 games. Villasuso had a big hand in the team’s championship game win, going 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI as the Wranglers defeated Front Royal, 4-0, to win the 2010 Lineweaver Cup.

Zeke DeVoss and Steven Ewing teamed together for the Duluth Huskies of the Northwoods League in Minnesota. DeVoss finished the summer as one of the team’s top hitters with a .310 average, three homers, 26 RBI, 46 runs and a team-best 27 steals in 44 games. The only UM pitcher participating in summer ball, Ewing went 3-1 with 30 strikeouts and a 4.61 ERA in 41 innings pitched in nine games (eight starts).

Chantz Mack closed out his summer as a member of the North Adams Steeplecats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League in early August. Mack finished hitting .197 with 12 hits, five walks and four runs scored in 61 at-bats.

Stephen Perez played in just 18 games for the Chatham Anglers in the Cape Code Baseball League, hitting .162 with five runs scored.
