June 8, 2010
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Four University of Miami baseball players were selected on the second day of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. Junior left-hander Chris Hernandez, senior right-hander David Gutierrez, senior infielder Scott Lawson and junior left-hander Iden Nazario were all taken within the first 30 rounds of this year’s draft.
Hernandez – a 2010 Louisville Slugger All-America selection – was taken with the seventh round with the 233rd overall selection by the Boston Red Sox. Following him, Gutierrez went in the 18th round (555) to the Minnesota Twins, Lawson went in the 29th round (881) to the Tampa Bay Rays and Nazario went in the 30th round (919) to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Through two days and 30 rounds, five `Canes have been selected in the draft. On Monday, junior catcher Yasmani Grandal was selected with the 12th overall pick in the first round by the Cincinnati Reds.
Hernandez headlines Miami’s selections on the draft’s second day. The two-time All-America and three-time All-ACC selection is 10-3 with a 2.77 ERA this season. In 97 1/3 innings of work, he has struck out 106 batters and is holding his opponents to a .229 batting average against him. This marks the second time Hernandez has been drafted after he was selected in the 14th round of the 2007 by the Detroit Tigers.
Gutierrez, who is 5-2 with a 5.12 ERA in 58 innings this season for UM, was selected by Minnesota for the second time in his career after the Twins took him in the 37th round in 2009. He also joins his brother Carlos – a first-round pick in 2008 – in the Twins organization.
Lawson, who was named the 2010 NCAA Coral Gables Regional Most Outstanding Player on Tuesday, is hitting .319 with 13 homers, 80 RBI, 113 runs scored and 20 steals in his two seasons in Coral Gables. Previously, he was a 40th round pick by the Houston Astros in 2008.
Nazario was the last `Cane taken off the board on Tuesday. In his UM career, Nazario is 7-5 with a 6.88 ERA, striking out 104 batters in 83 2/3 career innings. In 2007, he was a 41st round pick by the Washington Nationals.
The draft concludes Wednesday with Rounds 31-50, starting at noon ET.
