Miami Baseball to Honor Luke DeBold This Weekend

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball program will honor former Hurricane relief pitcher Luke DeBold prior to Friday night’s 7 p.m. game against Maryland at Alex Rodriguez Park. DeBold, who lettered at Miami from 1999 – 2002, lost his battle with cancer Thursday morning.
A moment of silence will be held prior to Friday night’s game. In addition, flags at Alex Rodriguez Park will fly at half mast Friday night and the initials `LD’ will be painted on the field behind home plate throughout the series against the Terrapins.
The Hurricanes also will wear `LD’ on the side of their hats the remainder of the 2010 season.
DeBold was a part of both of Miami’s National Championship teams under head coach Jim Morris in 1999 and 2001. He appeared in all four College World Series games in 2001, finishing the series with a 1.42 ERA while holding his opponents to a .182 batting average against him.
One of the top set-up men in school history, DeBold ranks fifth all-time at Miami with 103 career appearances – all coming in relief. He also owns the school record for appearing in 13 straight games during the 2000 season. Following his senior season, DeBold signed a free agent contract with the Minnesota Twins in 2002.
A viewing will be held on Monday, May 3 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Burns-Kish Funeral Home at 8415 Calumet Ave. in Munster, Ind. Kathy’s Florist (219) 937-1128 is recommended for arrangements.
The funeral will be held at St. Joseph’s Church in Dyer, Ind. on Tuesday, May 4 at 10 a.m.
