Coral Gables, Fla. – The No. 10 University of Miami women’s tennis team took straight-set sweeps across singles play, and added a doubles point sweep, to take down Maryland, 7-0, in ACC action Friday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
Miami (16-3, 9-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) began the day honoring two seniors – Claudia Wasilewski and Laura Vallverdu, with a plaque and flowers on court one on the grandstand side of the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Both student-athletes were taking part in their last regular season home match for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes opened the day in competition claiming all three doubles matches for the early 1-0 advantage over Maryland (2-10, 0-6 ACC).
Miami’s team of Danielle Mills and Claudia Wasilewski grabbed their eighth win of the year together at the No. 3 doubles slot, taking down Maryland’s Julia Huschke and Burce Kurkan, 8-1. That was followed by the `Canes duo of Laura Vallverdu and Gabriela Mejia, ranked No. 6 in the nation as a pair, taking down the Terps’ Maggie MacKeever and Lisa Miller at the top singles spot. Miami earned the sweep at the No. 2 spot, courtesy Anna Bartenstein and Bianca Eichkorn, ranked No. 55 together, taking down Maryland’s Lexi Brand and Jordan Hansbrough, 8-4. The win was the sixth in a row for the Bartenstein/Eichkorn duo, while raising their record for the year at 14-3.

In the process, Mejia collected her 13th consecutive win – the second-longest active streak on this year’s roster, and improved to 24-3 overall, and upped her record to 18-1 in the spring.
Next off the courts for the `Canes was senior three-time All-American Laura Vallverdu (No. 7), picking up a 6-0, 6-1 triumph from Maryland’s Maggie MacKeever on court one. Additionally, she has won six consecutive matches at the top flight singles position.
The match-sealing victory in singles play came for UM at the No. 2 position, using a 6-1, 6-2 victory from sophomore Anna Bartenstein (No. 71) as she took down Maryland’s Julia Huschke. The win for Bartenstein raised her season performance to 27-4, and she is now 17-2 in the spring, while collecting a win in her last seven matches.
UM senior Claudia Wasilewski bumped the UM advantage at 5-0, as she defeated the Terps’ Burce Kurkan at the No. 6 position, using a 6-2, 6-2 line in the victory. Wasilewski is now 19-10 on the year (12-5 dual), and has won four consecutive matches for the Hurricanes at the No. 6 spot.

Mills bumped her overall record to 19-10, while improving to 14-4 in the spring. She has also won six-straight matches for the `Canes, while moving to 9-4 on the season at the No. 4 position.
The final match concluded on court three, as junior All-American Bianca Eichkorn (No. 33) turned in a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Maryland’s Lisa Miller. Eichkorn’s victory allowed her to remain the only Hurricanes student-athlete with a perfect spring record (18-0), while making her season record 23-4. The Tengen, Germany native keeps her winning streak intact at 19 matches, dating back to the conclusion of the fall campaign.
Miami will now have a week off before taking on back-to-back Top 10 opponents on the road in ACC play next weekend. UM will walk back on the courts on Sat., Apr. 17, taking on No. 2 North Carolina in Chapel Hill at 11 a.m. A day later, the Hurricanes travel down Highway 55 to Durham for a match against defending ACC and NCAA Champion Duke at 1 p.m. The matches will serve as deciding seeds for all three participating teams as the ACC Championships begin a week later (Apr. 22-25) in Cary, N.C.
