Raleigh, N.C. – The No. 9 Miami Hurricanes (14-3, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) rolled to their 11th consecutive victory on Friday, topping No. 30 NC State (9-7, 1-5 ACC) by a score of 7-0 in ACC women’s tennis action at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. With the victory over the Wolfpack, Miami extended its regular season ACC winning streak to 16 matches dating back to last season.
Miami started the day with a doubles sweep of all positions.
The 55th-ranked duo of UM’s Anna Bartenstein and Bianca Eichkorn turned in the first win, picking up their fourth-straight win courtesy an 8-5 triumph over NC State’s team of Lenka Hojckova and Daria Petrovic at the No. 2 slot. The win allowed the `Canes duo to move their record for the year out to 12-3, and improved their mark for the spring at 8-1. That win was followed at the No. 1 position, seeing UM’s seventh-ranked duo of Laura Vallverdu and Gabriela Mejia post an 8-5 decision over the Wolfpack’s Berkeley Brock and Sandhya Nagaraj, clinching the doubles point in the process. Mejia and Vallverdu have now collected wins in their last three matches, improving their season record to 17-5 (6-3 dual).
The final doubles match concluded at the third spot, with UM’s Danielle Mills and Claudia Wasilewski using an 8-4 victory over NC State’s Diana Mortlock and Pender Sessoms. The Mills/Wasilewski combo has now registered three-straight wins, and bumps its season record to 7-8 (4-5 dual).
In singles play, Miami took straight-set wins in four positions en route to the eighth consecutive victory over NC State. The Hurricanes now sit at a perfect 8-0 all-time against the Wolfpack.
Hurricanes senior Claudia Wasilewski (Boulogne, France) was the first off the courts for UM – the second time in three matches she has walked off first with a win – as she collected a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set win from NC State’s Pender Sessoms at the No. 6 position. Wasilewski raised her record for the year to 18-10, while improving to 11-5 in the spring. It was also her third consecutive singles victory.
The next UM point came via freshman Danielle Mills (Bradenton, Fla.), as she rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 victory past the Wolfpack’s Diana Mortlock at the fifth spot. Mills now stands at 17-10 overall (12-4 dual), while picking up a win in her last four matches. She also extends her record to 8-2 in her last 10 matches.
The match-clinching point came for Miami courtesy Gabriela Mejia (Cali, Colombia), ranked No. 100 nationally in the ITA/Campbell singles poll, as she collected a 6-2, 6-3 victory from Daria Petrovic at the No. 4 position. Mejia moves to 22-3 on the 2009-10 season, and ups her spring record to 16-1 (second-best on the squad). Additionally, she has won 11 consecutive matches in singles competition.
The UM lead stretched to 5-0 when senior three-time All-American Laura Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela), ranked No. 7 in the nation, fought past NC State’s Lenka Hojckova at the top singles spot, finishing with a 7-5, 6-0 line. Vallverdu is 26-9 on the year, and advanced her spring record to 14-3. It was her fourth consecutive win at the No. 1 spot.
All-America junior Bianca Eichkorn (Tengen, Germany), ranked No. 33 in the nation, closed next, turning in a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 win over NC State’s No. 68 Sandhya Nagaraj at the No. 2 position. Eichkorn continues her impressive spring winning streak, keeping her dual record clean at 17-0, while stretching her winning streak to 18 matches. She is currently 22-4 overall on the year, while improving to 6-2 against nationally-ranked opponents on the campaign.
Miami finished its third consecutive sweep of an opponent at the No. 3 slot, using sophomore Anna Bartenstein (Graz, Austria), ranked No. 71 in the country, for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph over the Wolfpack’s Berkeley Brock. Bartenstein raises her overall record for the year at 25-4, while improving her spring record at 15-2 (third-best on the team) in her first season with the Hurricanes program. It was also her fifth consecutive win in singles play.
The Hurricanes will have little time to enjoy Friday’s victory, now traveling east on I-40 to Winston-Salem, N.C., where they will face ACC opponent Wake Forest tomorrow at Noon. For UM, Saturday’s match will be the sixth in 11 days. However, UM has a break following the match against the Demon Deacons, not scheduled to step onto the courts again until Fri., Apr. 9, when playing host to Maryland at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at Noon.
