Miami's Chris Hernandez Named ACC Pitcher of the Week
March 22, 2010
GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Miami junior left-hander Chris Hernandez has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. The award is the second for Hernandez in his career and the first for a Miami player this season.
Hernandez was recognized after tossing his first career complete game in Miami’s 3-1 win against Duke on Friday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. He allowed one run on just two hits while walking one and striking out six to earn his second win of the season.
The complete game was the first for a Miami pitcher in a true road game in nearly seven years, going back to when J.D. Cockcroft last accomplished the feat for the `Canes at Virginia on April 11, 2003.
The outing also marked the fourth time in his first five starts this year that Hernandez allowed just one earned run – including both of his starts to open ACC play. On the year, Hernandez owns a 1.97 ERA, allowing just seven earned runs while striking out 33 in 32 innings of work.
Clemson’s junior outfielder Kyle Parker earned Player of the Week honors after going 8-for-17 (.471) with three homers, one double, five RBI, 10 runs, five walks, a 1.059 slugging percentage, and .591 on-base percentage in five games last week.
Hernandez’s previous ACC Pitcher of the Week honor came during his freshman year when he struck out 11 and held Virginia scoreless in eight innings of work on April 25, 2008.
Miami returns home to host UCF on Tuesday, March 23 at 6 p.m. at Alex Rodriguez Park. For tickets, call 1-800-GO-CANES or visit www.hurricanesports.com.
