Miami's Bartenstein Wins Singles Title at Michigan Invite

Ann Arbor, Mich. – University of Miami sophomore Anna Bartenstein claimed three wins in singles play – including a three-set triumph on Monday – to walk away with the singles crown at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. The matches took place at the Varsity Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Michigan.
Bartenstein was the only Hurricanes player to collect three wins in the three-day event, registering 19 points to claim the singles title. Senior three-time All-American Laura Vallverdu had two wins for the Hurricanes, as she finished second in the singles standings with 16 points.
In Monday’s singles action against opponents from the University of Michigan – ranked No. 20 as a team, the No. 7 Hurricanes played exciting tennis to earn critical victories.
Miami’s Anna Bartenstein earned a three-set win over Michigan’s Whitney Taney at the third flight position, claiming a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 decision on her way to the singles crown. Bartenstein’s victory allowed her to move to a team second-best 10-2 record on the season.
Vallverdu – ranked No. 7 in the Campbell’s/ITA singles poll – took a win at top flight singles, defeating No. 36 Denise Muresan in three sets (6-2, 0-6, 6-1). Vallverdu raises her record for the year to a team-leading 12-6 mark. She now needs just three wins to become Miami’s all-time singles leader, sitting at 108 wins in her stellar career.
The Hurricanes’ Bianca Eichkorn (No. 99) took down Rika Tatsuno in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 – allowing the Tengen, Germany native to improve to 5-4 on the campaign.
It was Gabriela Mejia (No. 93) earning a hard-fought win at the fourth singles position, walking off the court with a 6-3, 7-5 defeat of Tania Mahtani. Mejia upped her mark for the year at 6-2, finishing the Michigan Invitational sporting a 2-1 record.
Miami senior Claudia Wasilewski fell in number five singles play to Michigan’s Michelle Sulahian, 6-1, 6-0. And freshman Danielle Mills fell to Michigan’s Mimi Nguyen, 6-2, 6-3 at flight six singles.
In doubles play, Miami’s third-ranked duo of Vallverdu and Mejia took down Washington’s 11th-ranked Joyce Ardies and Denise Dy, 8-2, in an exciting match for the `Canes duo. The UM connection improved their record to 11-2 together on the year – earning their second victory in the three-day tournament.
The `Canes Bartenstein and Eichkorn combined at flight two doubles for an 8-1 triumph of Washington’s Venise Chan and Samantha Smith, while Wasilewski and Mills fell, 8-2, to the Huskies’ Aleksandra Malovic and Lina Xu at number three doubles.
Miami will open the dual season at home on Sat., Jan. 23 against the Florida Atlantic Owls. The match will take place at noon inside the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
