Tallahassee, Fla. – University of Miami women’s tennis players claimed three singles and two doubles wins on Friday, opening up with a solid day’s performance at the FSU Seminole Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla. The event is taking place at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of FSU.
Miami entered the weekend holding two of the top seeds in the six competing brackets designated for this year’s event. Bianca Eichkorn and Anna Bartenstein claimed the top honors for the Hurricanes on the singles side, while the team of Danielle Mills and Claudia Wasilewski were selected as one of the three top doubles team for the doubles draws.
The Hurricanes did not disappoint as they registered three singles wins in the four brackets they participated in on Friday. They also laid claim to wins in both of their doubles matches.
UM sophomore All-American Bianca Eichkorn, ranked No. 21 in the ITA preseason poll, picked up a thrilling 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 win over UCF’s Jenny Frisell in opening round play out of the Garnet Bracket. Eichkorn ups her record for the season, shortened thus far by injury, to a 3-1 mark in singles play.
Eichkorn now faces Florida State’s Francesca Segarelli on Saturday in the semifinals beginning at 10:15 a.m.
Sophomore transfer Anna Bartenstein brought her record for the fall out to 6-1 courtesy a 6-2, 6-3 straight-set defeat of Mississippi State’s Olesya Tsigvintseva. Bartenstein, a transfer from Tulane University, will take on USF freshman Ecaterina Vasenina in the semifinals of the Gold Bracket on Saturday.
Miami continued to get positive results in singles play over in the Silver Bracket as freshman Danielle Mills grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Mississippi State’s Valeriya Makarycheva. With the win, Mills evens her record for the fall at 3-3, and now will challenge USF’s Allyn Mueller on Saturday.
The lone loss on the singles side for the `Canes was a tough 6-0, 6-0 setback for senior Claudia Wasilewski, falling at the hands of UCF’s Alexis Rodriguez. Wasilewski looks to rebound Saturday when facing Furman’s Jessica Preeg in the consolation round.
In doubles play, the top seeded team in the Gold Bracket was Miami’s Mills and Wasilewski. In teaming together for the first time on the season, the UM duo recorded a convincing 8-3 win over Memphis’ team of Amanda Brown and Kelly Gray. Mills and Wasilewski will battle Furman’s Arguello and Betts–winners of their opening round match against UCF’s Doerfler and Rodriguez, on Saturday.
Miami’s other participating doubles tandem consisted of Bartenstein and Eichkorn, pairing for an 8-1 victory against UCF’s Jenny Frisell and Andrea Yacaman. The UM duo was also pairing together for the first time this season, and will look for a win in their second-ever matchup together on Saturday, facing off against Florida State’s Segarelli and Macfarlane–the top seed in the Garnet Bracket.
Action continues back at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Saturday with the first match beginning at 10 a.m. Admission to the FSU Seminole Invitational is free.
