Women's Tennis Concludes Georgia Tech Invite

Atlanta, Ga. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team concluded its three-day affair at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational on Sunday, ending with another positive showing in the season-opening tournament at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga.
Sophomore Gabriela Mejia concluded the weekend undefeated, not only keeping her record for the year unblemished, but stretching her winning streak from last year up to five matches. Mejia finished the weekend grabbing a 6-2, 7-5 victory from Princeton’s Hilary Bartlett in Flight 1 action on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Anna Bartenstein, a transfer from Tulane University, also finished the weekend unblemished for the Hurricanes by walking off the court victorious Sunday courtesy a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 three-setter against Princeton’s Melissa Saiontz in Flight 2 action.
Mejia and Bartenstein each grabbed three wins overall on the weekend, including Mejia’s 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 upset of Georgia’s Yvette Hyndman, ranked No. 41 in the ITA poll, in Friday’s opening round. Bartenstein also defeated a ranked opponent this weekend with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Cameron Ellis of Georgia, ranked No. 108 in the ITA.
Senior Claudia Wasilewski fell in her final match Sunday, dropping a 5-7, 2-6 decision to Rachel Saiontz of Princeton in Flight 3 play. Wasilewski is currently 3-1 on the year, dropping just the one match Sunday after posting two wins in singles play Friday. Freshman Danielle Mills was unable to grab a win, falling in her second consecutive three-set match. This time, dropping a 3-6, 6-0, 11-13 setback to Princeton’s Monica Chow.
Mills falls to 1-2 on the season in her collegiate debut over the weekend for the `Canes.
The doubles team of Gabriela Mejia and Laura Vallverdu concluded the weekend unbeaten with two victories. Meanwhile, the newfound team of Bartenstein and Mills also claimed two wins on the weekend, keeping their record clean for the season at 2-0.
Miami will be back in action when they travel to the Riviera/All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The event runs Oct. 3-11, and more information may be found by visiting www.itatennis.com.
