May 18, 2009
GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Miami junior closer Kyle Bellamy was named to the 2009 All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team, as announced by Commissioner John Swofford on Monday. In addition to Bellamy’s first-team honor, three other Hurricanes – second baseman Scott Lawson, catcher Yasmani Grandal and starter Chris Hernandez – were named to the league’s second team.
Bellamy closed out the regular season with a league-high 15 saves, six more than any other ACC reliever. On the year, Bellamy is 3-1 with a 1.09 ERA, allowing just five earned runs while striking out 58 in 41 1/3 innings of work. Eleven of his 15 saves have come in more than an inning of work, while he is holding his opponents to a .151 batting average against him.
Lawson has led the ‘Canes in hitting the majority of the season and enters this week with a team-high .347 average. On the year, the junior leads the team in hits (68) and doubles (19) to go along with four homers, 33 RBI, 46 runs scored, nine stolen bases and a .463 on-base percentage.
Grandal has been one of the ACC’s top power hitters this season, ranking in the league’s Top 10 in both homers (15) and slugging percentage (.621). Heading into this week’s ACC Championship, the sophomore is hitting .305 with 41 RBI, 44 runs scored and a team-high tying 108 total bases.
Hernandez, also a sophomore, leads UM with a 7-3 record in 13 starts this season. He leads all Miami starters with a 4.31 ERA this year and has allowed just seven earned runs over his last 32 innings. Hernandez currently ranks in the league’s Top 5 in both wins (7) and strikeouts (83).
North Carolina junior first baseman Dustin Ackley, who keyed the Tar Heels to an ACC Coastal Division title and a top-five national ranking, was named the 2009 ACC Baseball Player of the Year. Georgia Tech’s Deck McGuire is the ACC Pitcher of the Year, while Virginia pitcher/first baseman Danny Hultzen is the league’s Freshman of the Year. Florida State’s Mike Martin was named Coach of the Year. The honors were selected via a vote of the league’s head coaches.
The fifth-seeded Hurricanes (35-18, 18-12 ACC) will open this week’s ACC Baseball Championship with a 12 p.m. match-up against fourth-seeded Georgia Tech on Wednesday, May 20 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Round-robin pool play will be held May 20-23 (game times Noon, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. each day). The winner of each division will then advance to meet in the championship game on Sunday, May 24, at 1 p.m.
