CLEMSON, S.C. – After winning the first game of a doubleheader at No. 20 Clemson on Saturday, No. 5 Miami dropped the second game, 9-1, in front of 6,217 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Miami (25-9, 11-6 ACC) and Clemson (22-12, 10-7 ACC) will now decide the series Sunday at 12 p.m. after UM won the first game on Saturday, 12-8.
The Tigers’ four-run first inning would be all they need, as UM was able to collect just two hits in the night-cap after recording 13 in the series opener earlier in the day.
Starter David Gutierrez (2-4) went 3 1/3 innings, allowing a career-high six runs on five hits and five walks in a losing effort. Sam Robinson came on in relief of Gutierrez and tossed two effective innings, holding the Tigers to just two hits while striking out one. Kevin Youst allowed three earned runs over 2 1/3 innings before Michael Rudman came on to record the last out of the eighth.
Jason Hagerty finished the night 1-for-3 with a solo homer while Ryan Jackson had UM’s other hit, going 1-for-2.
Clemson starter Chris Dwyer (4-2) tossed a complete game to earn the win. In nine innings of work, he allowed just the one run on two hits while walking four and striking out 10.
Ben Paulsen had three of Clemson’s 10 hits, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Matt Sanders also had multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Clemson jumped out to a big lead, scoring four first-inning runs on a two-run triple by Paulsen and a two-run homer by Kyle Parker.
The Tigers added two more runs in the fourth on a bases-loaded RBI infield single followed by a run-scoring fielder’s choice grounder to second.
Miami finally got on the board in the sixth when Hagerty hit a two-out, solo shot to left. The homer was his second of the day after hitting a solo homer in the series opener earlier in the afternoon.
Clemson added three late runs in the eighth to close the scoring at 9-1.
Sunday’s game will be televised live on CSS. Lefty Iden Nazario (4-0, 5.40 ERA) will take the mound for UM on Sunday while Clemson will counter with right-hander Justin Sarratt (3-1, 4.66 ERA).
