Miami Rowers Finish Up at San Diego Crew Classic

San Diego, Calif. – The University of Miami rowing squad competed in two races on Sunday, finishing up a west coast trip at the 36th Annual San Diego Crew Classic at the Crew Point Shores on Mission Bay in San Diego, Calif.

The Second Varsity Eight began the day with a fifth place showing in the Women’s Collegiate JV Petite against some top-notch competition. Under the guidance of interim head coach Boban Rankovic, the `Canes were seeking to continue yesterday’s success in the 2V8 race today.

The Hurricanes crossed the line with a time of 7:15.37, two seconds head of Sacramento State (7:17.64). The UM team was comprised of Lizzy Elner (bow), Alexa McCanick (2), Karalyn Van Aken (3), Marleena Eyre (4), Isabelle Prosser (5), Molly Thornton (6), Kate Rickers (7), Stephanie Parrish (stroke) and Christina Crocco (coxswain) in the race.

The `Canes had a third place finish yesterday in order to earn a spot in the heat finals today. Washington State led all teams with a time of 6:56.7, while Iowa was second at 7:06.43, followed by UCLA (7:06.76) in third place.

The First Varsity Eight for UM was back in action as they took a fourth place showing in the Women’s Collegiate Varsity Invitational Petite. The Hurricanes finished with a time of 7:07.43 in the event. They did manage to gain a win over UC-Davis.

UM raced the team of Monika Sajincic (bow), Nic Saner (2), Rachael Sporko (3), Emily Wingrove (4), Laura Cordner (5), Sarah Medland (6), Frida Schneider (7), Camilla Espana (stroke) and Shira Kharrazi (coxswain).

First place awards went to UCLA who finished with a time of 6:52.2, followed by Iowa (6:53.77) and Notre Dame (7:02.39) to round out the top three teams.

UM ended the weekend with a number of top five times, and had an impressive run in Rankovic’s debut as interim head coach of the Hurricanes. Miami will be back in action for the next race when they travel to the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships on Apr. 20 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
