Game 2 Notes (#1 Miami vs. #8 Georgia)

• Florida State will face Miami in an elimination game Monday at 1 p.m. (Miami will be the home team). Georgia will take on Stanford in Monday’s 6 p.m. game (Georgia will be the home team).
• Miami is playing in its 23rd Men’s College World Series, a total that ranks second only to Texas among all-time CWS appearances. The Hurricanes’ (46) wins rank fourth among all programs.
• Georgia improves to 7-9 in its six MCWS appearances, as the Bulldogs have six trips to Omaha in its eight all-time NCAA appearances.
• The two ninth innings of today’s games combined for 15 of the of the day’s 32 runs (46.9 percent)
• Georgia tied a MCWS record with just three assists against Miami, matching a record set seven other times, most recently by South Carolina against Texas on June 14, 1975 (complete list is on page 86 of the 2008 MCWS record book).
• The last time two teams both won on the final at-bat of the day came in 2005, with victories by Arizona State (8-7 over Nebraska in 11 innings) and Baylor (8-7 over Tulane).

• Georgia’s win tonight snapped a six-game losing streak for the SEC dating back to the 2005 MCWS Championship series. A loss tonight would have matched the longest MCWS drought in conference history, a seven-game stretch between 1969 and 1976.
• With tonight’s win, Georgia improves to 2-2 against No. 1 teams this season, as the Bulldogs dropped 2-of-3 to Arizona during the opening weekend of the season
• Georgia was 1-20-1 this season when trailing after eight innings this season. The only other time Georgia won a game when trailing after eight innings was at Vanderbilt on May 10, when the Bulldogs overcame a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2 in 10 innings.
• Georgia has now played in front of the two largest crowds in college baseball this year, tonight’s crowd as well as the 22,599 against Georgia Tech at Turner Field on May 13.
• Ryan Peisel had four RBIs, his highest total since driving in five runs against Kennesaw State on March 25
• The three Miami homers marks the 21st time this season that Georgia has allowed at least two homers in a game.
• Bryce Massanari (17), Gordon Beckham (10) and Lyle Allen (9) all extended their hit streaks.
• Joshua Fields has not allowed an inherited runner to score all season (0-for-14). Fields has pitched at least one inning in 30 of 32 appearances this season.

• Entering tonight’s MCWS opener, Miami was 45-0 this year when taking a lead into the ninth inning and was 75-2 over the last two years when leading after eight innings
• The throwing error by Miami’s Carlos Gutierrez in the ninth inning was his first of the season. The four runs he allowed tied a season high, also set March 16 against NC State.
• With his seventh-inning homer, Yonder Alonso now has 24 homers on the season (two off the national lead) and has homered in three straight games.
• Miami has now hit at least two homers in 32 of 62 games this season and has hit at least three homers in 11 games this season, including tonight.
• Kyle Bellamy’s appearance tonight was his 42nd of the year, a total that leads the country. He has appeared in Miami’s last 13 games dating back to May 16th against North Carolina.
• Miami was eighth in the country in fielding percentage (.975 pct) entering tonight and this was 47th time this season that Miami had one or no errors
• Only two teams over the last 28 years have lost their opening game and have come back to win the title (Oregon State in 2008 and USC in 1998.
• Through two games, only one batter has been hit by a pitch after the 2007 MCWS saw a series record 53 hit batters
• Miami’s Chris Hernandez struck out five of the first six hitters he faced but did not strike out another hitter before leaving in the seventh inning
• Miami is now 7-10 when getting out-hit this season and has been held in single figures in his for the third time in the last four games. Miami has scored four runs or less in three of its last four NCAA Tournament games.
