CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – Former University of Miami infielder Roger Tomas has signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Tigers. Tomas left earlier in the week to join the GCL Tigers – Detroit’s rookie ball team – who is a member of the Gulf Coast League.
“I’m glad there was a team that I could help out,” Tomas said. “I just want to go out, play hard and see what happens after the season.”

He was the third leading hitter for the Hurricanes as he batted .337 with 70 hits, 45 runs scored, 15 doubles, 11 stolen bases and 29 RBIs. He started 55 of 59 games. In four seasons at UM, Tomas started 186 of 211 games compiling 208 career hits with 38 doubles, eight triples and two home runs. He also posted 86 RBIs. Defensively, Tomas fielded .969 with 57 putouts and 101 assists while committing just five errors in 2007. He finished his career with 263 putouts, 454 assists and 33 errors.
Tomas was named the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Year for the University of Miami. He also won the Arnold Novins Award voted as the most popular player by the Hurricanes’ fans.
