No. 5 Seed Miami to Face No. 4 Seed Clemson in ACC Tournament Opener

GREENSBORO, N.C. – – Miami earned the No. 5 seed in the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament which begins Wed. May 23, at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville (Fla.). The Hurricanes will face No. 4 seed Clemson at 4 p.m. in their first game of pool play for Division A, which has No. 1 seed Florida State, Clemson and No. 8 seed Wake Forest.
Atlantic Coast Conference divisional champions Florida State and North Carolina headline the 2007 ACC Baseball Championship set for Jacksonville, Fla., Wednesday – Sunday, May 23-27. The Seminoles, who claimed their first Atlantic Division title two weeks ago, are the field’s top seed, while the Tar Heels collected their second straight Coastal Division hardware and the No. 2 seed.
The complete pairings and game times for the eight teams competing in the new round-robin format tournament are as follows:
The Division `A’ bracket will consist of No. 1 seed Florida State, No. 4 seed Clemson, No. 5 seed Miami and No. 8 seed Wake Forest.
The Division `B’ bracket will include No. 2 seed North Carolina, No. 3 seed Virginia, No. 6 seed NC State and No. 7 seed Georgia Tech.
In the Division `A’ bracket, the top-seeded Seminoles, who tied a league-best 24-6 record in ACC action, will play Wednesday at 7 p.m. against eighth-seed Wake Forest. FSU will be featured in a primetime showdown with Miami on Friday at 7 p.m., and then battle Clemson on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Seminoles have met all three opponents on the field this year, and are 3-0 against the Demon Demons, 2-1 against Miami and 1-2 versus Clemson.
Wake Forest won two of three games at Virginia Tech last weekend and finished conference play at 14-16 to earn the remaining spot in this week’s championship. In addition to playing FSU, the Demon Deacons will hit the diamond against Clemson on Friday at 4 p.m. and then take on Miami at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Deacs went 1-2 against both Clemson and Miami during the 2007 regular season.
Clemson has added pressure heading into this week’s tournament as the defending champion. The fourth-seeded Tigers (36-20, 18-12 ACC) finished runner-up in the Atlantic Division and will hit the field against No. 5 seed Miami, which compiled a 17-13 record for a third-place finish in the Coastal Division, on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Both teams met in the regular season with the Hurricanes taking two of three games from Clemson.
Playing in the Division `B’ bracket, the No. 2 seeded Tar Heels will meet seventh-seed Georgia Tech on Wednesday at 1 p.m. UNC wrapped up league play at 21-9 and picked up the Coastal Division title for the second year in a row. Georgia Tech placed third in the same division with a 15-14 ledger in ACC action.
The Tar Heels are also slated to face off Tobacco Road rival NC State on Thursday at 7 p.m. and then resuming action on Saturday against Virginia at 1 p.m. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets also play Thursday meeting Virginia at 4 p.m. before meeting NC State two days later on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
No. 3 seed Virginia and sixth-seed NC State will open up tournament action this year, as the two teams hit the field Wednesday at 10 a.m. UVa split with Boston College over the weekend in a series shortened by Mother Nature and posted a runner-up finish at 19-9 in the Coastal Division, while NC State (36-19, 16-14 ACC) notched two of three games against the Clemson Tigers for a third-place showing in the Atlantic Division. UVa and NC State have battled each other on the field this year, with the Wolfpack holding a 2-1 edge.
The two teams with the best record within their respective division brackets will advance to the Championship title game on Sunday, with the winner earning the Acc’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
In addition, all 13 games in this year’s ACC Baseball Tournament will be televised for the first time in league history with Fox Sports Net South and SportsSouth providing live coverage. The league tournament will also be broadcast on four other networks, which includes FSN Florida, SUN Sports, Comcast and NESN. Check your local listing for more details.
