Maine, Weeks Help Miami Edge Wright State, 3-2

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – Scott Maine struck out a career-high 12 batters and Jemile Weeks hit his fifth home run of the season to lead Miami to a 3-2 win over Wright State Friday night at Mark Light Field in game one of the three-game nonconference series. Weeks went 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Hurricanes (28-19).

After surrendering a leadoff home run in the top of the first, Maine settled down to pitch seven scoreless innings. He retired nine straight batters from the end of the first inning to the fourth inning, which included striking out the side once. He held the Raiders to one run on five hits in eight innings. Danny Gil earned his fourth save of the season allowing one run on two hits in the ninth. He also struck out two.

Mark Sobolewski pushed his hitting streak to 18 games with a single in the bottom of the sixth. Roger Tomas and Gus Menendez each had a single.

Erich Schanz (5-4) dropped his fourth decision allowing three earned runs on four hits. He walked six batters. Seven different Raiders had at least one hit in the game. Ross Oeder went 1-for-5 with a run and a RBI.

Weeks put Miami ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth on his three-run home run after back-to-back walks by Yonder Alonso and Dennis Raben.Wright State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when he Oeder sent the second pitch he saw over the wall in left field.

The Raiders threatened in the top of the sixth after Justin Parker walked and made it to third on Casey McGrew’s single. Maine struck out Brian Shoup looking to end the inning.

Wright State pulled within 3-2 in the top of the ninth after Shoup hit a leadoff single. He made it to second on a wild pitch. Aaron Fields then singled and Shoup scored from third on a wild pitch. Gil recorded the final two outs for the save.

Miami and Wright State continue their series Saturday night at 7 p.m. RHP Enrique Garcia (4-3, 3.34 ERA) will face RHP Garret Holleran (3-4, 4.16 ERA). On Saturday, in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, all general admission tickets on game day are just $5.
