No. 5 Virginia Shuts Out Hurricanes, 3-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Virginia’s Matt Packer, Andrew Carraway and Casey Lambert combined to throw a five-hit shutout and the fifth-ranked Cavaliers defeated Miami, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field. Yonder Alonso led the Hurricanes going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Miami was shut out for the first time since the 2004 season when North Carolina took a 2-0 decision in Coral Gables snapping a 168-game scoring streak by the Hurricanes. It was also the first time in 190 games that Miami was shut out on the road.

Junior lefty Scott Maine (2-4) pitched well for the Hurricanes despite taking the loss. He allowed two earned runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings and struck out five. Alex Koronis and Danny Gil combined to toss 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Virginia freshman left-handed pitcher Matt Packer (3-1) held the Hurricanes to four hits in 5 1/3 innings and recorded eight strikeouts. Senior closer Casey Lambert pitched the final inning and struck out two for his second save of the series. Brandon Guyer went 2-for-3 with one RBI while Mike Mitchell finished 2-for-3.

Virginia took advantage of an early Miami error for the second straight day to go ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Guyer singled and moved to second a throwing error by the catcher. He scored on Patrick Wingfield’s base-hit to left field.

The Cavaliers went ahead, 3-0, in the bottom of the fifth. Greg Miclat knocked a single into center field leading off the inning. Brandon Marsh followed with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt from Sean Doolittle, David Adams grounded out to score Miclat and Marsh scored on Guyer’s base-hit to left field.

The Hurricanes threatened in the top of the sixth when Alonso hit his second single of the game to right field and Mark Sobolewski walked with no outs. Roger Tomas placed a nice bunt down just in front the plate along the third base line to advance the runners. Carraway worked Virginia out of the jam, when he struck out Kevin Diego swinging and was able to get Dave DiNatale to fly out to right field to end the inning.

The Hurricanes and Cavaliers wrap up their three-game series Sunday at 12 p.m. The game will be televised live on CSS. RH will face Virginia lefty Matt Packer.

Series Notes: Blake Tekotte leads UM thus far in the series with three hits while Yonder Alonso has two hits … Virginia has recorded 26 strikeouts in the series and held UM to only nine hits … Miami pitchers have thrown well holding the Cavaliers to five earned runs in 16 innings and recording 13 strikeouts … Miami’s last shutout on the road was April 27, 2003 at Florida State, 12-0.
