The Game

Head coach Katie Meier reunites with her alma mater as <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Miami looks to snap a three-game slide Sunday afternoon against No. 1 Duke at the BankUnitedCenter at 4 p.m.

After falling 68-61 on the road to FloridaState Friday, Meier and the Hurricanes, who play their second game in three days, are 15-10 overall and 5-7 in league play.

 

As a team, Miami is averaging 74.5 points per game, shooting 44.1 percent from the floor.

 

National Player of the Year candidate Tamara James, who posted 20 points against FSU. James leads the ACC in scoring (19.8 ppg) and steals (2.88 spg) and tops the UM roster in rebounding (7.6 rpg).

 

Junior guard Renee Taylor is fifth in the league in scoring (15.6 ppg).

 

Senior guard Melissa Knight is third on the team in scoring (11.1 ppg), and is shooting 57.7 percent from the floor over the last four games.

Sophomore forward Lamese James is averaging 7.8 points over the last four games.

A Quick Look at Duke

Head coach Gail Goestenkors and the Blue Devils – ranked No.1 in both the AP and coaches poll – are 23-1 on the year and 11-1 in ACC play.

 

Duke leads the NCAA in scoring, averaging 89.3 points per game while allowing just 56.7 points per game.

 

The Blue Devils are led by National Player of the Year candidate Monique Currie, who enters the game averaging 15.5 points per game.

 

Mistie Williams is second on the team in scoring (11.7 ppg) and rebounding (6.2 ppg).

 

The Series

Sunday’s game will mark the third meeting between the Hurricanes and Duke. The Blue Devils have won each of the previous meetings, both of which came last season, including the last contest, a 95-61 decision in Durham.

 

In that game, Mistie Williams had 23 points and eight rebounds for second-ranked Duke, which scored the first 10 points.

 

Jessica Foley and Monique Currie added 18 points apiece for the Blue Devils.

Tamara James scored 26 points to lead Miami (12-14, 4-9), which couldn’t stop the Duke offense and struggled for good shots throughout the game. The Blue Devils made 57 percent of their shots and led by as many as 42 points.

Miami Hurricane women’s basketball fans will have the opportunity to collect player trading cards during all home games. The first 200 fans in attendance at each game will receive the cards, which will feature a different player each game during the 2005-06 including Sunday with sophomore guard Albrey Grimsley.
