Jemile Weeks Earns NCBWA Preseason Honor

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami sophomore second baseman Jemile Weeks was named to the 2007 National Collegiate Baseball Writers (NCBWA) Preseason All-America Third Team today.
Weeks, who had a stellar freshman season at UM in 2006, earned a spot on the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team and was a second team All-ACC pick at second base. He batted .352 in 66 games with 69 runs, six home runs and 40 RBI, and led the team with 90 hits and eight triples.
The 2006 postseason saw Weeks showcase his talents on the way to earning a starting spot on Team USA’s gold medal team. Weeks led the team with a .459 average, five doubles, three home runs and 12 RBI in the 2006 postseason, and was a key component in Miami’s run to a fifth-place finish in the 2006 College World Series.
He is the Hurricanes’ leading returner on offense and tied a freshman record with a 16-game hitting streak. Weeks also tied a school record with nine assists in one game at second base last season.
The Hurricanes will finish their fall practice schedule this weekend.
