CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami will play host to their second Big 10 opponent in six days as the Michigan State Spartans come to “The Light” on Wednesday, March 8, at 7 p.m. This is the last game UM will play before opening ACC conference play on Friday, March 10 against Virginia Tech.

Wednesday’s game will be broadcast live by the Student Voice of UM, WVUM (90.5 FM).

It will be the fifth game in five days for Michigan State (3-3) in its seven-game, eight-day road trip. Michigan State has been successful thus far, winning its first three games of the road trip with 6-3 and 15-6 wins against Lehigh and an 8-2 win against Sacred Heart, all of which were played at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater. The Spartans mirror their Big 10 foes and Miami’s last opponent, Indiana, in that both have a new head coach, David Grewe for the Spartans, and both start the season on a lengthy road trip. MSU won’t play a first home game until March 25 when it hosts Western Illinois.

Miami (12-6) will send junior Ricky Orta (RHP, 1-1, 3.60 ERA) to the hill. Orta is making his third start on the season, including an exhibition against the Florida Marlins in which he allowed just two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.

Michigan State junior right-handed pitcher Craig Brookes (0-0, 3.86 ERA) gets the nod for the Spartans.

Miami lost the last time these two teams met on March 8, 2000 but leads the all-time series 40-18-2.

The Hurricanes continue their 16-game homestand with its ACC opener against Virginia Tech on Friday, March 10 at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 1-800-GO-CANES.
