Miami Completes Sweep Of Bethune-Cookman With 9-1 Win

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami Hurricanes defeated Bethune-Cookman 9-1 Sunday evening to sweep the series in front of 1,507 at Mark Light Field. Miami improved to 9-6 on the season, while Bethune-Cookman dropped to 3-11.

Miami starting pitcher Scott Maine (1-0) gave up one run on one hit in the first inning, but settled down to earn his first career win. Maine completed five innings, giving up one run on one hit, with four strikeouts and four walks. Freshman first baseman Yonder Alonso led the team with three runs scored and three RBI.

B-CC’s Joseph Gautier (1-2) went two and two-thirds innings in the loss. Gautier gave up four runs, three earned, off of three hits with four strikeouts.

Miami tied the game up in the second after Gautier loaded the bases on a leadoff walk to Yonder Alonso. Danny Valencia reached on an error to short and Tommy Giles got on with a bunt single. Dennis Raben brought Alonso home with a ground out to the short stop to tie the game at 1-1.

The Canes took the lead with three runs in the third inning. Alonso singled home Weeks and Giles hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to put UM up 4-1.

Miami broke the game open with five runs on four hits in the fourth inning off Wildcat reliever Colin Irvine. Weeks doubled in Roger Tomas from second base before Blake Tekotte scored on Jay’s single. Alonso used his team-leading sixth double of the season to knock in two more runs. Valencia doubled in Alonso to complete the scoring in the fourth and give the Canes a 9-1 lead.

Ricky Orta came in to relieve Maine in the sixth inning and gave up one hit and struck out one in two innings pitched.

Miami will play the Florida Marlins in an exhibition game on Wednesday in Jupiter at 3:05 p.m. The Hurricanes return to Mark Light Field next weekend for a three-game series against Indiana, beginning with a 7 p.m. first pitch Friday, March 3.

Game Notes: Maine’s four strikeouts and five innings pitched were career highs…This was the Canes second- straight victory by the score of 9-1 over the Wildcats…The sweep was the first three-game sweep of the season for the Hurricanes… Miami’s pitching staff gave up just 10 hits and compiled a team ERA of 1.33 in the series to hold B-CC to a team batting average of .118.
