Hurricane Baseball Opens 2006 Practice Friday Morning

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball team opens practice for the 2006 season with a meeting Friday morning, January 6, followed by a morning and afternoon practice at Mark Light Field.

Miami is returning 15 lettermen from the 2005 team that finished 41-19-1 and advanced to the Lincoln NCAA Super Regional. Five starters are returning for the Hurricanes on offense, including outfielder Jon Jay, who was named to Baseball America’s All-America second team on Thursday. Jay, who is also on the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, was an All-ACC performer in 2005 and led the team with a .408 average.

The Hurricanes are ranked 11th in Collegiate Baseball’s preseason poll, and are 18th in RosenblattReview.com’s preseason ranking.

Fans and media are welcome to all Hurricane practices, but are encouraged to enter through the left and right field gates due to the construction at Mark Light Field. Miami will conduct double sessions until classes begin on Jan. 17. The practice schedule for the remainder of the week is below: Morning Break Afternoon Friday 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Media 1:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Media 1:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Sunday 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Media 1:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Notes: Head coach Jim Morris will be attending the ABCA Coaching Convention in Chicago on Friday and will not be at practice… The Sunday, February 19 game against Florida at Mark Light has been moved from 1 p.m. to noon.
