Hurricanes Announce 2006 Baseball Schedule

Oct. 11, 2005

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball program’s 61st season of play will feature games against eight 2005 NCAA Division I Tournament teams, the 2005 NCAA Division II runner-up and the Florida Marlins. Fifty-six games (including two exhibition contests) are on the 2006 Miami baseball schedule, released Tuesday.

Miami, which is coming off a 41-19-1 season (19-10-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) that ended with a loss in the Lincoln Super Regional to Nebraska, will have some hurdles to overcome in its second season in the ACC and in its quest to return to the College World Series. The Hurricanes will look to make its 34th consecutive postseason appearance, the longest such streak in any NCAA sport.

“We have a tough ACC schedule and non-conference series against teams like UCLA on the road and Florida at home,” head coach Jim Morris said. “Once again, this is going to be one of the tougher schedules in the NCAA.”

UM tunes up with the annual Alumni Game on Jan. 27, before it opens the season with home-and-home games against Florida International on Jan. 28 and 29. It hosts its first series of the season against 2005 Big South Conference Tournament champion Winthrop before heading to the West Coast for the first time since 2003 to play UCLA, and then returns home to play intra-state rival Florida at home.

The Hurricanes will face a back-loaded and daunting ACC slate that includes six NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago. Miami will face all six of those teams the last two months of the regular season, beginning with Clemson at home on March 30. In addition, UM will play host to conference foes Virginia Tech (March 10-12), North Carolina (April 7-9), Virginia (April 21-23) and Wake Forest (May 12-14).

Miami’s ACC road schedule will also be tough. It opens the ACC road slate at Duke (March 17-19) and Maryland (March 24-26). April 14-16 are reserved for a weekend series against rival Florida State in Tallahassee. The ACC road schedule continues at N.C. State (April 28-30) and finishes in Atlanta with a three-game series against 2005 ACC Champion Georgia Tech (May 18-20) to close out the regular season.

UM will host other non-conference series against Bethune-Cookman (Feb. 24-26), Indiana (March 3-5) and Wright State (May 5-7), in addition to the Winthrop series. Single-game home meetings are scheduled against Louisville (Feb. 15), Michigan State (March 8), Fordham (March 14), Manhattan (March 15) and 2005 Division II runner-up North Florida (May 16).

The `Canes will also play the Florida Marlins in an exhibition contest in Jupiter on March 1.
